We're always up for a day in the mountains with the dogs. One cool, sunny day, we slept in and were feeling lazy, but still wanted to advantage of the beautiful weather and head outdoors. We chose Elbow Falls, located in Kananaskis Country and only 45 minutes from Calgary, Alberta.
Elbow Falls is one of our favourite places. The waterfall itself is beautiful and changes in height from around 6 meters in the winter, to a low of around 3 meters in the spring/summer. There's a spectacular backdrop of the river and the mountains and a choice of walking trails. Paved paths and staircases lead to viewing platforms, or you can take the gravel trails alongside the river. There are picnic tables and firepits in the park too. For those who really love outdoor adventures, you can hike all the way to the Elbow Lake, the headwaters of the Elbow River.
Elbow Falls is accessible all year round. Dogs on leash are okay but please pick up after them and keep them under control (bear, mountain sheep, and other wildlife are often seen in the mountains). It's often crowded in the summers but quiet and peaceful in the winter months, our favourite time of the year to visit.
